How weather-proof are skylights?
Provided your HandiLite skylight is installed in line with the instructions, our weatherproofing will stand up to the most severe storms. Correct sealing ensures long-lasting protection from the elements. Check the installation videos available on our website.
How do I install to a tile roof?
Visit our install guides page for detailed installation instructions and videos to Tiled roofs.
How do I install to a Corrugated Iron (CGI) roof?
Visit our install guides page for detailed installation instructions and videos to CGI roofs.
How do I install to a Deck roof?
Low pitch roofs often use metal “Deck” roofing sheets. To penetrate these requires you to engage a Licensed Roof Plumber to ensure correct water-proofing. The HandiLight Hybrid SolarLights do not require any roof penetration and may be a good alternative for Deck roofs.
If I have a tile roof, will I be required to cut the tiles?
In most cases it is likely that you will have to cut tiles to install the skylight. Although this should be a relatively simple procedure if required. Check the installation videos available on our website, specific for Tiled roof installs.
What do I do if I am having trouble installing my skylight?
Visit our install guides page for detailed installation instructions and videos. You can call us on 1800010566 during office hours.
What size skylight do I need?
Selecting the right size for a skylight involves balancing factors such as the amount of natural light you want to bring in, the room's size and purpose, energy efficiency, and the architectural design of your home. Visit our sizing guide page to help you choose the appropriate size for a skylight.
What is the difference between square and round skylights of the same size?
The surface area of the skylight dictates the amount of light which can pass through it. A skylight of 400x400mm Square for example has 23% large surface area than a skylight of 400mm Round. A square skylight will therefore allow for the transmission of 23% more light.
What if I need shaft longer than 2 meters to span my roof cavity?
It is always wise to look inside your roof space before deciding what skylight is right for you and confirm 2 metres of shaft will be sufficient for your needs. If required, longer shaft can be purchased from your retail supplier.
However, as the light is required to travel down the shaft further, the light transmission efficiency will be reduced. This can be overcome by increasing the size of the skylight: go 1 size up, or go square instead of round.
Can I join light-shaft together to extend them?
No, if the standard 2-meter shaft is too short for your application, you will need to purchase a longer shaft; 3-meter shafts are readily available. You cannot join 2 pieces to extend them: they will get undone over time.
Who can install my skylights for me?
HandiLite Skylights are supplied with easy-to-follow instructions and install videos and can be installed by most DIY-ers or Handyman. Visit our install guides page for installation instructions.
It may be wise to employ the services of a tradesman for roof windows, but an experienced handyman would not be out of their depth. If in doubt, contact your local tradesman or home maintenance man. Low-pitch roofs (below 10 degrees), such as Deck or Concrete/Membrane may require a Roof Plumber to install the unit.
What are the benefits of Clear Prismatic Light Diffusers?
Clear prismatic diffusers consist of myriads of clear prisms which diffuse the light evenly over a wide area. This ensures the maximum light transmission and effectiveness of the product, while softening the light and nullifying glare.
Can I get a new diffuser for a broken skylight?
HandiLite Skylights can replace damaged domes and diffusers for our own products. Just contact your local retailer.
What is a SolarLight?
A SolarLight is a “Skylight Alternative”, ideal for when a traditional skylight is impractical to install. This may include multi-level buildings or rental properties where roof penetrations may not be allowed.
The units runs off the power generated by a dedicated PV Solar panel, which is wired to an LED Light Diffuser panel in the room. Once install, the unit will light up the room automatically as soon as there is light onto the PV Solar panel. It will fade in/out with the outside light conditions.
Will the HandiLite Hybrid SolarLight run without the driver?
The current Generation-4 models of the HandiLite Hybrid SolarLight kits include a small “Input Control Unit” (ICU), which is already attached to the back of the LED light panel. The cable that comes down from the PV Solar panel can easily be plugged into this ICU; the LED light panel will then come on and operate as a basic SolarLight as soon as there is light onto the PV Solar panel.
The ICU also has a 240V plug on it, which can be plugged into a standard 240V GPO that is switched to a light-switch in the room.
The use of this 240V input is OPTIONAL.
This “HYBRID” feature is great for when you are replacing an existing downlight with a SolarLight, as in that case there would already be a GPO available in your ceiling space, along with a light-switch in the room. Alternatively you may need to organise wiring if you want to use this option.
If you are not using the 240V input option, please do leave the ICU in place (as it came in the box), since the ICU also provides line conditioning of the input from the PV panel.
Will I need to cut holes in my roof when installing a SolarLight?
When installing the PV Solar panel of an HandiLite SolarLight onto a metal roof it will generally be possible to feed the power-cable in underneath the ridge-cap; so it is not required to drill any holes.
When installing the HandiLite SolarLight to a tile roof the power lead can be simply run into the roof cavity by guiding it up under an existing tile.
Will the HandiLite Roof Window fit my roof?
HandiLite Roof Windows are designed with a roof specific soaker tray which is fabricated to suit Tile, Corrugated Iron or Deck Profile roofs. These roof profiles are not interchangeable so ensure you order the window type which is right for your roof.
Also note, HandiLite Roof Windows can be installed, without modification, to roof pitches as low as 5 degrees. All Roof Windows will be fabricated to suit installation long side running down the fall of roof, this is called “Portrait”. Windows in “Landscape” orientation will need to be custom ordered.
Can I get the exterior flashings to match my roof colour?
HandiLite Roof Windows are supplied with a zinc soaker tray as standard. However, at HandiLite we are able to fabricate all exterior flashings out of high grade Colorbond® Steel to match your existing roofing or tile colour. Simply nominate the colour you require on your order. There is a slight additional charge for this option.
How do I install a HandiLite Roof window?
HandiLite Roof Windows have a revolutionary one-piece frame and soaker tray which is designed to simplify the installation process. Installation to the roof level of any home should be well within the capabilities of any experienced home handyman. Visit our install guides page for installation instructions.
However, it must be remembered that installing your Roof Window to your roof is only half the job. The interior finishing of the project must also be considered. Many homes will require an interior shaft to be boxed out and plastered. This sort of project will certainly require the involvement of someone with considerable construction experience, if not a qualified tradesman.
Motorised Opening windows will require electrical wiring and a power source in a suitable position; you may need to engage a qualified electrician to have this installed.
How will I operate windows which are installed out of reach?
All HandiLite Opening Windows are designed for ease of use. Our standard model is supplied with a slimline chain operator and winder handle. For windows which are too high for standard operation we also offer a 3-metre extension rod and hook system which is simple to use and inexpensive to purchase. The HandiLite Roof Window PLUS is available with a motorised chain actuator and wall-switch plus remote control.
Will the Roof Windows allow rain inside if they are open?
HandiLite Roof Windows PLUS sash and awning system is designed to shed rain, hail and even snow away from the window opening in all but the most extreme weather conditions. We also offer the option of a rain sensor for automated windows.
Am I able to customize window sizes, glazing options or other features to suit my needs?
The HandiLite Range of Roof Windows are exclusive to our premiere hardware partners and are limited to the standard sizes, finishes and features listed in the point-of-sale material available in store.
The manufacturer is able to fabricate custom windows to suit the needs of individual customers, however the windows will not be part of the Roof Window PLUS range and, as such, may not be available with the same features or options as our standard range. Price variations may also be applicable depending on the required customization.
How much air will a solar vent extract from the roof space?
The HandiLite Solar Roof Vents are designed as a more effective alternative to the traditional whirly bird product. They provide ventilation by ACTIVELY drawing hot air out from your roof cavity. They feature an extraction fan, which is powered from an integrated PV Solar panel.
Depending on sunlight conditions the 200mm Solar Roof Vent will extract up to 300 CFM.
Do I need to install eave vents to work in conjunction with the Solar Vent?
The HandiLite Solar Roof Vents are designed to extract air from you roof cavity. As a result of this function, they also pull air into your roof cavity to replace the air being forced out. Most roofs in Australia are not fully sealed. Air gaps exist between tiles, above the lip of roof gutters and in many other places in all roofs. These existing opening generally provide for enough fresh air to be pulled in, replacing the exhausted hot air.
Where on my roof should I position the Solar Roof vent to maximise its performance?
Solar Roof Vents should be positioned on the highest point of the roof. On a corrugated roof this should be with the top edge of the flashing placed beneath the ridge cap. On a tile roof the vents should be located in the second row of tiles from the ridge line. If you are installing more than one Solar Vent, try to space them evenly across the roof line. Visit our install guides page for installation instructions.
What is the thermostat setting on the Premium Solar Vent?
The Premium model 200mm Solar Vent is supplied with a thermostat. This thermostat will switch the fan motor on only when the temperature inside the roof cavity exceeds the pre-set temperature level of 30 degrees Celsius. The Premium model also includes a re-chargeable lithium battery which will continue to operate the fan for up to four hours after sundown.
Which setting do I use when installing the Premium Roof Vent?
The HandiLite Premium Solar Roof Vent has a small control-box underneath, which has a manual switch with 3 settings. The 'OFF' setting is designed as a default setting for shipping only. The 'TEST' setting allows the installer to confirm that the unit is functioning correctly prior to installation. Note it is important that the solar collector is exposed direct sunlight when testing the unit's operation.
The manual switch should be set to the 'ON' position when the unit is installed.
NOTE when the switch is in the ON position the fan will not activate unless the thermostat is exposed to 30+ degrees. Keeping the switch in the TEST position will override the thermostat, which may be required for some applications. When operating the unit in the TEST setting, the unit will still have its battery functionality.
